'Chinese cricket has potential' - Taylor

Thursday, October 16 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

A women's cricket team led by Test great Claire Taylor and ex-England captain Mike Gatting visit China to promote the sport and establish a development fund.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Claire Taylor, former England player:

"The people that play it, treat it very seriously, the girls that we've got, that we're playing against, they train very hard, they practice their sport and they take it very seriously and the people that are involved in the sport take it very seriously. I think that it's still a small sport, as it is in a number of countries around the world, but I think it has the potential to grow really big. What we tend to find, even in England is that there's people who haven't seen women play, haven't seen women play cricket and when they do come and watch us play and they see the joy that we bring to the game and the skills and so forth, then they come and watch again and they want to get involved and they want their daughters to play. So, as the game starts to become more popular over here and a bit more televised, the more people see it and we'll get that sort of rolling momentum that we need for the sport to really develop."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Gatting, former England captain:

"I think that the ICC (International Cricket Council) will be looking this way and hopefully, we at the MCC and even the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and Cricket Australia, who have all had little bits to do with it over the past few times - and the Asian Cricket Council - so we just hope that we can actually, at long last, really put some foundations down, with a framework, with the help of Mr. Song (Chinese Cricket Association Secretary General Song Yingchun) and the Chinese Cricket Association, we can put in place and people will enjoy this great game that we love."
