The Arsenal-Manchester United rivalry was reborn in India when Robert Pirès' Goa took on Mikaël Silvestre's Chennaiyin on Wednesday.

But it was a man formerly of the blue half of Manchester who had a hand in the opening goal. Chennaiyan's Elano was tripped in the area but Balwant Singh broke the deadlock after a calamitous error by Jan Seda.

Edgar Marcelino's free-kick deflected off the wall and on to the roof of the net as Zico's Goa sought to level the match.

Elano was an omnipotent presence for Chennaiyin and the Brazilian playmaker made it 2-0 with a tiro livre just before half-time.

Brazilian legend Zico then saw his hosts pull one back. Youness Bengelloun did well to keep this cross in play and Gregory Arnolin netted from close range. Alas it only proved to be a consolation as Chennaiyan held on to win 2-1.
