Steenkamps reject Pistorius 'blood money'

    Monthly payments that Oscar Pistorius has been making to the family of killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp will be returned to the athlete, a court hears. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel says the Steenkamp family will be repaying every cent and they previously turned down an offer of £25,000 of 'blood money'.

    "There is nothing to tell except what I have told in court, and that is that when Reeva passed away, the family were in financial difficulties. I conveyed to Oscar's legal team, they conveyed it to Oscar, he made an offer to pay them 6,000 rand (542 US dollars) a month to help with their rental and just to survive..."

    SOUNDBITE (English) Gerrie Nel, prosecutor:

    "The accused sold his last asset, his motor vehicle, for an amount of 375,000 rand (33,920 US dollars) and requested that the amount be paid into the trust account of the legal representatives acting on behalf of the parents of the deceased for the pain and suffering caused to as a result of the incident..."

    "Did the legal team of the accused inform you that the deceased's family rejected the offer of 375,000 rand?"

    "I was informed that no further legal action was going to be taken by them (Reeva Steenkamp's parents) but that they did not want the amount offered by the accused."

    UPSOUND, off camera, (English) Gerrie Nel, prosecutor:

    "That the accused mother (++Nel meant to say the deceased's mother, referring to June Steenkamp++) a went so far as to say that she reject that she doesn't want blood money. Do you know that?"
