Joel Maringa, a social worker for the Office of Correctional Services, has recommended that Oscar Pistorius be held under house arrest for three years. Maringa said Pistorius could stay at his uncle's house in Pretoria because his behaviour is "socially acceptable", while doing 16 hours a month of cleaning at a local hospital.

"That the accused be placed under house arrest for the duration of his sentence with due consideration of his cooperation in general, and other relevant circumstances, in order to bring home the element of punishment to the accused, and to attempt to prevent further crime perpetration by means of strict control and management. "

"In order to satisfy the community's expectations with regard to retribution and compensation for the crime, it is recommended that the accused should perform free community service for 16 hours in a month with a possibility that the commissioner may suspend the number of hours, partly, or readjust them depending on the cooperation and compliance with the conditions in general."

"The accused will benefit from correctional supervision as a sentence option in that in the process of compensating for the (inaudible), he will get an opportunity to restructure and modify his offending behaviour within the community context, where there are sufficient resources to produce the expected outcome."
