The opening round of the Nanshan China Masters, part of the OneAsia Tour, got underway at the par-71 Nanshan International Golf club on Thursday.
Local hero and a pioneer of golf in China, Zhang Lian-Wei, made a birdie at the par 4 ninth before dropping two shots on his back-nine to finish with a one-over 72.
Former US PGA regular and top world amateur, Michael Sim of Australia, is finding his way back into professional golf after suffering a series of injuries.
Sim, also making birdie at the ninth here, opened with a one-under 70.
Zhou Gou Wu of China almost made a hole-in-one with this brilliant tee shot at the 17th.
He rolled in the birdie putt, and finished his day with a round of 68 for a share of third.
Zhou's compatriot Li Hao Tong also sits at three under after failing to sink this par putt at the 18th.
American Daniel Woltman, a former Web.com player, earned his OneAsia card at the Q-school in California held earlier in the year.
Woltman, who lives in Atlanta, started strongly with a round of 67 and a share of the lead.
The American is the joint-leader alongside Rhein Gibson of Australia, who missed this five-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole, his 18th, to close with a four-under par 67.
