Intro:
Nicolas Colsaerts misses out on a possible round of 59 - but still grabs the lead after the opening round of the Portugal Masters on Thursday.
Script:
An unusually wet and windy outlook greeted those set to contest the opening round of the Portugal Masters at Vilamoura on Thursday, but where some struggled - others prospered.
Defending champion David Lynn managed the conditions well to record a first round 65.
The Englishman found seven birdies and a lone bogey at the seventh on his way to a promising opening round score - a share of sixth at six-under-par.
Alex Levy enjoyed a flawless opening round to make a perfect start.
The Frenchman found an even smattering of eight birdies and ten pars on his way to a round of 63.
Levy will begin the second round tied alongside Scott Jamieson in second place.
Nine birdies on Jamieson's card - with his lone error coming at the par-five 17th - in his round of 8-under.
But the lead - and the headlines - belonged to Nicolas Colsaerts.
No player has ever broken a score of 60 in the 42-year history of The European Tour, but Colsaerts looked set to change all that after he followed seven birdies with eagles at the 15th and 17th holes.
But the Belgian slid a 20 foot birdie putt agonisingly just past the left-hand lip of the hole at the 18th to fall short of that elusive feat by just a single stroke.
So, Colsaerts so close but his astonishing round of 60 still good enough for a three-stroke lead at 11-under after 18 holes.
