Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori were both in action at the Shanghai Masters for their second round matches.

Australian Open champion Wawrinka had a first round bye and looked to be cruising when he broke Simon's serve in the 12th game to claim the opening set.

However, Simon broke back to take the second set and then survived an early break in the decider to win.

It was a continuation of poor form for Wawrinka, who lost at the first hurdle in Tokyo last week and slumped to a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 loss here.

US Open runner-up Nishikori had come into this tournament in good form, having won the Japan and Malaysian Opens in recent weeks.

However he was beaten in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 by Jack Sock of the USA.

Two seeds who made it through and will now face each other are Andy Murray and David Ferrer.

Ferrer, another player fighting for a spot in the eight-man field and seeded five here, rallied to beat Martin Klizan 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Murray, seeded 11, recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jerzy Janowicz.

The Scot has been on a roll the last three weeks in China, winning nine of his last 10 matches, as he tries to qualify for next month's ATP Finals in London.
