Williams on closed cockpits in F1 and Jules Bianchi

  • Intro:

Claire Williams, the deputy team principal of the Williams Formula One team, said the FIA and teams must look at enclosed cockpits for drivers following Jules Bianchi's crash in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

SOUNDBITE (English): Claire Williams, Deputy team principal of the Williams F1 team (on suggestions that F1 might move to enclosed cockpits for drivers):

"It's too early to have those conversations. The FIA and the event organisers need to do a full analysis into the accident that happened on Sunday and I think everyone's concern in our sport at the moment is with Jules and his recovery."

SOUNDBITE (English): Claire Williams, Deputy team principal of the Williams F1 team (on whether F1 teams knocked back the idea of enclosed cockpits previously because of how it would affect the look of the cars):

"I can't talk about what we discussed in our strategy group meetings. But safety is always on the agenda in Formula One. Our sport is dangerous at times, but a lot of work has been done behind the scenes in the past 20 years since Ayrton (Senna) died at Imola in 94. You see a lot of accidents in Formula One where you don't necessarily expect drivers to walk away and certainly prior to 20 years ago they wouldn't necessarily have done so. But a lot of work has been done and they do walk away in most scenarios now, but were always talking about safety in Formula 1. It's always on out agenda in order to make sure that our drivers our as protected as they can be in the sport that we compete in."

SOUNDBITE (English): Claire Williams, Deputy team principal of the Williams F1 team (on if enclosed cockpits should be considered):

"I think it's something we have to look at. If it can improve safety then of course it has to be on the agenda as a conversation to have. Enclosed cockpits aren't easy technically for us to integrate into a Formula One car and of course they change the very nature of what a Formula One car looks like. We have to look at all the options available to us whether it's an enclosed cockpit or not, but I think those conversations need to go on behind the scenes."

SOUNDBITE (English): Claire Williams, Deputy team principal of the Williams F1 team (on if it will be difficult for those involved in Formula One to race in Russia this Sunday following last weekend's accident):

"Whenever we have a situation like this in our sport it reverberates around it and that's quite natural. Everyone is of course hugely concerned for Jules and the condition he is in at the moment. We are just monitoring that, trying to keep communications with the FIA who are in charge of it with the hospital. Going into Russia is going to be really difficult for everybody, not least Jules' colleagues and the drivers that have to line up on Sunday afternoon."
