Seeds Fognini and Gulbis crash out of Shanghai Masters

    Script:

A day to forget for Latvia's Ernests Gulbis - the 12th seed losing in straight sets in the first round of the Shanghai Masters to Mikhail Youzhny.

The first set went on serve until Gulbis was broken by the Russian who won it it 6-4.

The Latvian recorded his best ever performance at a grand-slam earlier this year when he reached the semi-finals of the French Open but things went form bad to worse for him in Shanghai and quickly found himself faced with being 5-1 down in the second set.

His fate was then sealed not long after - Youzhny faces Croatian Ivan Dodig in round 2.

The bigger surprise of the day though came when 15th seed Fabio Fognini crashed out in straight sets.

The World number 17 was beaten in just under an hour and 25 minutes by local favourite Chuhan Wang 7-6 6-4.

Wang was handed a wildcard entry into this year's Shanghai Masters and although he's 536 places below Fognini in the world rankings at number 553 he didn't disappoint the home support.
