There were wins for tenth seed Grigor Dimitrov and Richard Gasquet of France at the ATP Shanghai Masters on Monday (6th October), but number nine seed Marin Cilic was beaten 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (2) by fellow Croatian Ivo Karlovic.

Marin Cilic's bid to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals took a blow as Ivo Karlovic knocked the US Open champion out of the Shanghai Masters at the first round stage.

Cilic is sixth in the Race To London and is bidding to qualify for the season finale for the first time.

French pride was on display as Richard Gasquet met compatriot Jeremy Chardy.

Gasquet showed superb racquet control on his way to a straight sets victory.

Grigor Dimitrov is also hoping to qualify for London and he started his Shanghai quest with a stylish win over Denis Istomin.

Dimitrov is currently 11th in the Race to London rankings and will want to seal all 1000 points on offer to the winner in Shanghai.
