  • Intro:

Maria Sharapova beat Petra Kvitova in the China Open final in Beijing on Sunday.

    Script:

Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova met in the final of the China Open on Sunday in a repeat of the 2011 Wimbledon final.

Kvitova won that day and she started well here by breaking in the first game... Sharapova though would eventually win the set 6-4.

The Czech hit back to take the second set 6-2 and so the Championship went to a decisive set.

Sharapova won the next three games and went on to win it 6-3 to take the title in two hours and twenty eight minutes.

SOUNDBITE (English) Maria Sharapova, WTA China Open champion:

"I couldn't have played a tougher opponent than Petra (Kvitova) today. She has had such great success in the last couple of weeks. I think that the score line showed that I really had to dig deep in that third set to pull it out."

SOUNDBITE (English) Petra Kvitova, WTA China Oipen runner-up:

"I am a bit disappointed. I lost in the final - nobody wants (that) really. But Maria (Sharapova) played well and it was just a great match from her - and I am looking forward to my next tournament."

So disappointment for Kvitova, who would have moved to World number two with a win, instead it is the Russian who takes that spot with the 33rd title of her career.
