He may be unseeded at the Japan Open, but Gilles Simon is reminding everyone why he was once the world number six.

After beating the sixth-seed Roberto Bautista Augt in the first round, he dispatched Steve Johnson here in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.

Johnson couldn't live with the Frenchman's pinpoint accuracy as Simon booked his place in the semi finals in style.

But he'll face a tough challenge in the next round in the form of third seed Milos Raonic.

He had a similar passage to the semi final with his two-set win over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

His powerful groundstrokes proved the difference as he blasted his way past Istomin.

And with one of the best serves in the game, causing Istomin all kinds of trouble he came through 7-6 6-3.

The semi should be some matchup!
