An emotional Li Na says goodbye in Beijing

    An emotional Li Na said goodbye to fans in Beijing on Tuesday (30th September) as a retirement ceremony was held at the China Open.

    In front of fans and former opponents, Li Na said goodbye to the WTA Tour at her official retirement ceremony at the China Open in Beijing.

    The 32-year old became the first Chinese player to win a grand slam title by winning the French Open in 2011.

    Li consolidated her place as Asia's most successful ever player by becoming Australian Open champion earlier this year.

    "I really so happy I can be on the tennis tour to know all of you, to be your friend. It's very tough to say goodbye but I promise I can be around on the tour. I will not be an athlete anymore but I will come to see you."

    She was presented with flowers by Rafael Nadal and posed for photos with other players.

    A worsening knee problems has forced her retirement - and a teary goodbye in Beijing.
