Number three seed Petra Kvitova beats local favourite Peng Shuai to reach the third round of the China Open on Wednesday, but Caroline Wozniacki, seeded six, is put out by Australia's Sam Stosur. Alize Cornet beat Lauren Davis to also make it through to round three, while Maria Sharapova made it through to the fourth round after beating Carla Suarez Navarro.

Heavy rain across the National Tennis Center in Beijing played havoc with the schedule on Wednesday, as only a handful of matches were completed on day three at the China Open.

Those with tickets for the covered centre court got their money's worth though - in the women's second round, number three seed Petra Kvitova was in action, against Chinese number one Peng Shuai.

Kvitova - who won her third title of the year last week in Wuhan and qualified for Singapore as a result - got off to a slow start as Peng leapt out to a 2-0 lead, but the 24 year-old stormed back to take twelve of the next 16 games and cruised into round three with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore took a serious dent after the Dane was beaten 6-4, 7-6(9) by Samantha Stosur.

Stosur's next opponent will be Alize Cornet of France.

Cornet took a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Lauren Davis of the United States to book her place in round three after knocking out number ten seed Jelena Jankovic in the first.

The final match of the day saw number four seed Maria Sharapova up against Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain, the woman who beat her in three sets in Montreal back in August.

Suarez Navarro got off to a flyer on that occasion, but the world number 18 was not given any chance of a repeat here.

Sharapova stormed the first set 6-1, before going on to complete a straight sets win, after taking the second set 7-6.
