Intro:
Maaike Caelers and Sven Riederer were the respective winners of the women's and men's races at the ITU Triathlon World Cup event in Alanya, Turkey over the weekend (September 27th and 28th).
Script:
Alanya staged an ITU Triathlon World Cup event for the first time, with the resort city on Turkey's southern coastline the setting for the seventh round of the 2014 calendar.
Summer Cook of the USA and Italy's Gaia Peron led the way in swimming section of Saturday's (September 27th) elite women's race and they held a slight advantage at the transition into the cycling section.
However, Peron's compatriot Annamaria Mazzetti, is a formidable cyclist...she caught the leading pair.
Onto just their feet, Maaike Caelers of the Netherlands clawed back her deficit and deservedly claimed the triathlon title with the chasing pack nowhere to be seen.
An overnight storm wrecked the event's starting pontoon, so the elite men's field started their race from the shore on Sunday (September 28th).
Marco van der Stel of the Netherlands and Russian Dmitry Polyanskiy led the way after the swim.
France's Dorian Coninx led off after the conclusion of the cycle, with Italy's Alessandro Fabian in hot pursuit.
Yet it was Switzerland's Sven Riederer who came through to take only his second World Cup victory of his career.
Second place went to Alessandro Fabian of Italy, while Spaniard David Castro Fajardo reached an ITU World Cup podium for the first time in his career by finishing in third.
