As two time defending Road World Champion, Marianne Vos, led out the pack at the World Championships on Saturday in Spain, there was high drama from the word go.

A spectacular crash in the middle of the peloton meant several riders needed to retire to receive treatment.

The crash occured at the front of the field and as those up the front started to fall, more and more followed.

Fortunately none of the riders received any serious injures during the mass pile up & the race did eventually restart.

The cyclists were greeted by plenty of rain as the race reach its climax.

One of those out in front was indeed Marianne Vos. The Dutchlady though dropped off the pace in the closing stages.

Vos was among the riders caught and overtaken by Pauline Ferrand Prevot just metres before the finish line as the French cyclist edged the photo finish.

Lisa Brennauer of Germany took silver for her third medal of the week after winning gold in both the individual time trial and the team time trial.

Britian's Olympic hero, Lizzie Armistead finished in a disappointing 10th position.
