Rose-Stenson pairing key - McGinley

Saturday, September 27 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Reaction from Europe captain Paul McGinley and his USA counterpart Tom Watson after the opening day of the Ryder Cup. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson secured a 5&4 fourball victory against Americans Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson and a 2&1 foursomes win over Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English): Paul McGinley, Europe captain (Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson got you two points today. Hallmarks of a classic Ryder Cup partnership?)

"Those two guys are together for a particular reason. It's based on my understanding of who they are as people, as well as golfers. I've been studying them and watching them for quite a length of time and that's what I felt. That's why they are together. They obviously won both their matches today, and no reason not to put them out again tomorrow."

SOUNDBITE (English): Tom Watson, USA captain (When Bubba was in here earlier, he said he thought he played well today. You seemed to question that. Can you elaborate on that?)

"Well, he played better than Webb did today, bottom line. It takes two in fourball. It takes two in alternate-shot obviously. But in fourball, you can ham-and-egg it a little bit if one guy is not playing so well. That's not to say Webb is not going to play well. But I'm just -- Bubba is going back out and he's one of our studs."
