Rose: Winning first point 'important'

  • Intro:

Reaction from Europe's Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler of the USA on the opening day of the Ryder Cup.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Justin Rose, Europe (with Henrik Stenson beat USA's Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 5 and 4):

"Key moments? There was one as early as the second hole. You know the first hole it felt like we had a great chance to win, you know my out cam up just short -- the greens were fairly slow starting out, there was a bit of moisture in them. And then Bubba hit the green at the second hole, we looked, and both Henrik and I both missed the fairway -- Henrik wedged it to about eight-ten feet, Bubba three-putted, Henrik holed to win the hole. So that was a classic matchplay flip where it looked like we were going to lose and we ended up winning it. So that got us up and running and then the ninth hole again was another big, key turning point. You know, we were two up all through the front nine and we had chances at six, seven and eight to extend the lead -- we couldn't do it. You know, you're always aware when you're two up if the guys got back to one [down] they really get back into the match. So it was really important for us at two up to go three up next -- and that's what we managed to do at nine."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Rickie Fowler, USA (with Jimmy Walker halved match with Europe's Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer):

"You know half a point's better than nothing. You know, it at least puts something up on the board. We didn't want to go out there and lose a point. So we'll take a half point and see if we can get something better this afternoon."
