Great Britain's Sir Bradley Wiggins claimed his first road world championship title on Wednesday when he clinched gold in the men's time trial.

The 34-year-old beat three-time champion Tony Martin by 26.23 seconds on a hilly 47.1km course in Spain.

Martin trailed Wiggins by 9.64 seconds at the final time-check and the Brit extended his lead in the final 12km.

Wiggins clocked 56 minutes 25.52 seconds to claim a convincing win over Germany's Martin, who was chasing a fourth-successive title.

Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands finished third 41 seconds behind Wiggins.

Wiggins has won six track world titles during his career but the 2012 Tour de France champion had never won one on the road before now.

SOUNDBITE (English): Sir Bradley Wiggins, Great Britain, world time trial champion:

"It's been an up-and-down year (for me) obviously, I didn't ride the Tour (de France), you know. I want to sort of dedicate this win to my family, because my wife and children back home were there for me the whole summer, they had to put up with me when I was at home in June and July. My last world time trial championship, and I've finished with a gold medal, so... yeah."

Wiggins becomes the first British world time trial champion since Chris Boardman won the inaugural race in 1994.
