Johnson: US Ryder Cup team have no expectations

Wednesday, September 24 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

USA's Zach Johnson says his team aren't placing any expectations on themselves ahead of the Ryder Cup showdown.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Zach Johnson, world number 16 and Team USA member:  (on what it's like to have a captain, Tom Watson, who won his first championship before Johnson - 38 - was born)

"Well, I never really looked at it that way but it's tremendous. Bottom line is, he's a professional golfer with a resume that is awfully deep. He's got a lot of sage advice and wisdom that I think we can certainly dig into and maybe learn from."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Zach Johnson, world number 16 and Team USA member: (on a sense of expectation after seven American defeats in nine Ryder Cups)

"Well, I would think the expectations fall on the media, and potentially the fans. I don't think there's any expectations on our, certainly my, part, before I tee it up."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Zach Johnson, world number 16 and Team USA member: (on whether the team needs to redeem themselves after the 2012 defeat at Medinah)

"The whole redemption thing, I'm not suggesting that it's...there's not some validity to it, I don't know where it started or who came up with it. I don't think it was anybody in our team, and I don't think that's necessarily our approach. I mean that was two years ago, it's not...you know, it's not like I'm here because we lost two years ago, or my motivation is because we lost two years ago. I mean, my motivation is because I'm playing in a Ryder Cup and it doesn't matter what happened two years ago."
