Brazilian police appeared to strike supporters with batons during Sunday's derby between Corinthians and Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo were leading 2-1 when the match was stopped in the 55th minute after two separate groups of Corinthians fans allegedly clashed.

TV footage then seemed to show police officers using batons against several fans.

According to local media, earlier in the week the club's main firm, Gavioes da Fiel -- which translates as Faithful Birds -- demanded Corinthians to remove the seats in the Arena Corinthians' north stand, where the club's hardcore supporters reside.

The ground hosted this summer's World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Holland.

When the game resumed, Corinthians came from behind to win 3-2 although both sides were reduced to ten men in a bad tempered affair.
