It was double gold for Australia on the second day of the UCI Road World Championships in Spain on Monday (22 September), as Campbell Flakemore won the under-23 men's individual time trial event and Macey Stewart claimed victory in the women's junior individual time trial.

Australia's Campbell Flakemore roared home for the narrowest of victories in the men's under-23 time trial on Monday.

22-year-old Flakemore struggled initially on the rain-lashed 36.1-kilometre course in Ponferrada, Spain, and owed his victory to the extra pace he found on the final, technical third of the course.

Flakemore powered through the final five kilometres to snatch gold from Irishman Ryan Mullen by just one second in a time of 43 minutes and 49 seconds.

Bronze went to Stefan Kueng of Switzerland.

Flakemore's victory followed hard on the heels of a triumph for compatriot Macey Stewart in the morning's junior women's event.

The reigning Australian national champion, just 18 years old, completed the 13.9-kilometre course in 20 minutes and 8 seconds to finish 10 seconds ahead of Denmark's Pernille Mathiesen.

It was Stewart's third world title of the year following victories in the omnium and team pursuit at the junior track World Championships.

Australia dominated the day as they took third and fourth place too with Anna-Leeze Hull and Alexandra Manly respectively
