The first gold medal of the 17th Asian Games was claimed at the shooting range.

Hosts South Koera were expected to take the title, yet the Chinese claimed it.

In the men's 50-metre pistol event, India's Jitu Rai held a 0.2-point advantage over his rival Nguyen Hoang Phuong of Vietnam, ahead of the final shot.

Nguyen produced an erratic 5.8 in his final shot while Rai, taking his time, fired a 8.4 to win gold.

In the men's beach volleyball Hong Kong pair of Wong Chun Wai and Chui Kam Lang had too much for the South Koreans, winning in two games, 21-15, 21-13.

The women's badminton round of 16 match, was a far tighter affair.

Hong Kong played Chinese Taipei where the latter led 2-0 after winning the opening singles and doubles matches.

Yet Cheung Ngan Yi surprised Pai Hsiao Ma in a thrilling match.

The scores were tied at 2-2 going into the final tie, however Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei had too much and earned her country a quarter-final spot.
