Kent County Cricket ground at Canterbury in the south of England provided a suitably heavenly backdrop for something of a unique cricket fixture.

The Church of England was the home side as they took on a side representing the Vatican - the home of Catholicism in a charity cricket match.

It was the first time the two sides have met on the cricket pitch and comes nearly 500 years after the two Churches split.

Last October, the Vatican formed the St. Peter's Cricket Club and threw down the gauntlet to the Church of England.

The Vatican team wore the official colors of the tiny city-state - yellow and white - and their jackets had the seal of the papacy, two crossed keys.

In the end the Anglican side won the match after a nail-biting finish.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was on hand to present the trophy to the winning side, He thoroughly enjoyed the day:

SOUNDBITE: (English) The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby

" Obviously the right side were the winners - that almost goes without saying. I mean, joking apart, everything just fell into place. It was just..the Vatican side have had a great week, a wonderful tour. It ended with a nail-biting match in the most beautiful setting on a lovely day which we seldom get at this time of year and everything was great."

On Friday night, after the match, the teams were due to take part part in a gala dinner in aid of the Global Freedom Network, a charity initiative that both churches are jointly supporting.

The Global Freedom Network works against preventing and assisting victims of human trafficking and modern slavery.
