  • Intro:

World tour leader Gabriel Medina and eleven time champion Kelly Slater had few problems progressing from the round two heats at the Hurley Pro Trestles on Tuesday (16th September).

    Script:

Gabriel Medina came up against fellow Brazilian Raoni Monterio in his second round heat on Tuesday.

The Brazilian pair are vying for the Hurley Pro title at Trestles and the two are evenly matched in the world title race.

Medina - who currently leads the world title race with four events remaining - had to endure poor wave conditions against his compatriot, yet had too much for the 35th ranked Monterio.

The Brazilian won by a scoreline of 13.83 to 9.94 and now moves through to a round three encounter with wildcard surfer Carlos Munoz from Costa Rica.

The Central American is the first from his country to compete at the Dream Tour event, and will surely relish his contest with the No 1 ranked Medina, who was relieved to get through an uneasy day of surf.

"It's pretty tricky out there. At the beginning of the heat we couldn't catch much waves and then we had a restart and then it was so slow and I was getting nervous. Lucky to get through and pretty stoked."

Kelly Slater is another who is pushing for the title. The American impressed in his win over French surfer Jeremy Flores.

The veteran American pulling off a high scoring aerial move early to help defeat his opponent 15.93 to 10.14.

Slater now takes on local surfer Tanner Gudauskas in round three.
