US Open champion Marin Cilic visited his hometown of Medugorje in Bosnia on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was given an escort by a large number of motorcyclists before he arrived in an open-top car.

Cilic now represents Croatia but many from his hometown turned out to give him a hero's welcome after his triumph at Flushing Meadows.

The world number nine defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan in the New York showpiece last week to claim his maiden Grand Slam.

He completed a dream week by steering Croatia into the Davis Cup World Group. Cilic overcame Holland's Thiemo de Bakker in the crucial fifth rubber of their playoff tie to complete a 3-2 victory.

The man known as 'Chila' is coached by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, who backed the 6ft 6in player to win more Grand Slams.

Cilic's success means he's all but guaranteed his place at the ATP World Tour Finals in November.
