A three gun salute signalled the start of the fifth edition of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal on Sunday.
The World Tour finale race is a 17 lap, 12 kilometre circuit around Mount Royal.
The early breakaway group included Canadian Ryan Roth.
They built a lead that reached more than 11 minutes ahead of the peloton.
With three laps to go however, the pack, led by Astana reeled them in.
It took until the final lap to catch 22-year-old Jan Polanc and in the end it came down to a sprint for the line - Australian Simon Gerrans with his nose in front.
The Orica-GreenEdge rider easily held on, claiming the win, well ahead of world champion Rui Costa and Tony Gallopin.
It's Gerrans second consecutive victory of the weekend after winning in Quebec City on Friday.
The victories proving the 34-year-old is in peak form ahead of the World Championship road race in Spain on September 28, where another showdown with Costa awaits.
