Europe hold the lead at the Continental Cup

    With 222.5 points from 20 events, Europe held the lead after day one at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco on Saturday (13 September).

    Script:

    The second edition of the IAAF Continental Cup commenced at Stade de Marrakech on Saturday with four teams competing in 40 track and field disciplines over two days; Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe all competing.

    The men's 400 metres hurdles brought a maximum eight points for Africa as Cornel Fredericks came home first.

    In the women's 400 hurdles overall Diamond League champion Kaliese Spencer raced to victory for the Americas.

    European Eilidh Child was second, with Adekoya Oluwakemi third for Asia-Pacific.

    Africa were back on top again in the women's 800 metres as Kenyan Eunice Jepkoech Sum clocked 1 minute 58.21 seconds.

    LaShawn Merritt led the field home in the men's 400 metres.

    The former Olympic and world champion from the United States left Africa's Isaac Makwala and Yousef Ahmed Masrahi of Asia-Pacific to settle for second and third.

    There was an Americas' one-two in the women's 100 metre race as Veronica Campbell-Brown edged Michelle- Lee Ahye.

    Europe's James Dasaolu was triumphant in the men's race.

    The sprint relays rounded off the evening with the points totals reaching Europe 222.5, the Americas 191, Africa 164 and Asia-Pacific 137.5 at the halfway stage.
