Pascal Wehrlein won in Lausitzring on Sunday (14 September) while sixth place was enough for Marco Wittmann to claim the DTM championship with two races to spare.

    Script:

Marco Wittmann finished sixth on the day but nonetheless secured an emphatic maiden championship by a margin of 69 points.

19 year-old Pascal Wehrlein claimed a first DTM race win with his performance, having started on pole position.

At the start of the race, Wehrlein converted his first-ever DTM pole position into the race lead. The 19-year-old German went on to continuously extend his lead

Christian Vietoris - the man sitting 69 points behind Wittmann in the standings - finished in second place while an all-German podium was rounded off by Timo Scheider.

Wehrlein built an impressive lead early on and, but for a tense moment where he slid off the track on lap 16, the young driver maintained control to cross the line first in wet conditions.

The battle for runner-up position in the most popular international touring car series remains exciting. Christian Vietoris has good chances. After his second place at Lausitz, the German moves up from sixth to second in the drivers’ standings. After eight of ten rounds, the Mercedes-Benz driver has 59 points to his tally.

The battle for the runners-up place is still competitive, with Audi drivers Mattias Ekstrom, Edoardo Mortara and Mike Rockenfeller all in the hunt.

The DTM calendar continues in Zandvoort on 28 September before concluding on 19 October in Hockenheim
