The eighth and final day of racing in the 2014 Tour of Britain was split into two parts.

First up was an 8.8-kilometre time trial in central London.

Last year's tour winner Bradley Wiggins was quickest.

The Team Sky rider clocked nine minutes 50.71 seconds to move up four places into third overall.

More importantly, Dylan van Baarle hung on to the leader's yellow jersey - although Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland cut his deficit to the Dutch rider from 19 down to ten seconds.

Amid one attempted breakaway, Mark McNally suffered a fall.

As he kept out of trouble, meanwhile, it began to look certain Van Baarle would take the title.

He came 29th and retained his 10-second advantage over Kwiatkowski.

Wiggins completed the podium after finishing 22 seconds behind the triumphant Garmin-Sharp competitor overall.

The stage was taken by Germany's Marcel Kittel, who also won Stage 1.

In the sprint, Kittel (Giant-Shimano) just held off Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Nicola Ruffoni in a sprint along Whitehall.

Despite Wiggins finishing in third, the Brit will surely be delighted to finish on the podium having started the day in seventh.

For winner van Baarle the victory signals the biggest win of his career to date.
