The start of a new chapter in motor racing began in Beijing on Saturday as the Formula E racing series got underway.

The first season sees ten one hour races in street circuits around the world.

Each team have two drivers with two cars each - so as to be able to change halfway through the race due to lack of battery power.

Bruno Senna was an early casualty - the Brazilian forced out after contact with Takuma Sato on the first lap.

But the real drama came at the end, as Nick Heidfeld was sent flying off the track at the last corner.

Prost had led the race from the start , yet Heidfeld had earnt his chance - moving through the field from sixth to compete with the Frenchman.

Heidfeld, saw his chance and Nicolas Prost turned aggressively into the Heidfeld.

Both were eliminated by their collision and that allowed Lucas di Grassi to come through for the chequered flag.

Heidfeld later tweeted to say he was 'fine' after the crash & that he should of won the race.

Round two will be in Putrajaya, Malaysia on November 22nd.
