Saturday saw the longest stage in Tour of Britain history take place.

Kevyn Ista, Dylan van Baarle, Ignatas Konovalovas, Marcin Bialoblocki and Julien Vermote featured in a breakaway.

At one point, the quintet were over nine minutes clear of the peloton.

Gradually the gap reduced and with around 15 kilometres to go, Vermote decided to go it alone at the front.

Britain's Alex Dowsett held an overnight lead of 1min 25sec but the Movistar rider struggled to keep pace with the other top-10 contenders.

Having already conceded he's too far back to snatch overall race victory, fellow Briton Sir Bradley Wiggins finished the stage 47 seconds adrift in seventh.

Belgium's Vermote beat Konovalovas into second place by 23 seconds on Brighton seafront.

Van Baarle came third and opened up a 19-second lead over Michal Kwiatkowski at the top of the overall standings.
