Ogier snatches Rally Australia lead

  • Intro:

Sébastien Ogier wins the opening day of Rally Australia; four tenths of a second quicker than second-placed Volkswagen team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala.

    Script:

The rugged terrain around Coffs Harbour in New South Wales took its toll on the Rally Australia first day on Friday.

Thierry Neuville struck a rock on stage five and damaged his suspension, forcing the Belgian to nurse his Hyundai back to base.

That cost Neuville more than two minutes and found himself down in tenth place.

Britain's Kris Meeke had the lead for most of the day, winning stages two and three, but lost a lot of time on the short 'super special' stages seven and eight.

Meeke will go into the weekend 4.1 seconds behind the leader.

Jari-Matti Latvala made a charge late to move into second place. The Finn lies just four tenths of a second behind defending world champion Sebastien Ogier.

The Frenchman won four of the eight stages on offer on Friday, keeping the 30-year-old on course to retain his title.

Ogier leads Latvala by 44 points in the overall standings with four events left this year.
