  • Intro:

South Korean teenager Hyo Joo Kim made history on the opening day of the Evian Championship on Thursday (11th September), her round of 61 the lowest round ever in a major tournament.

    Script:

The final major of the year, the Evian Championship, teed off in France with ideal conditions producing a record-breaking round from 19-year-old Hyo Joo Kim.

The South Korean opened with a 10-under-par round of 61, finding five birdies on both the front and back nine.

It was the lowest round in a women's major. The record previously stood at 62.

Veteran Karrie Webb lies four shots off the pace in second.

The seven-time major winner said her current form is down to an old putter she last used 12 years ago.

While defending champion Suzann Pettersen and Brittany Lincicome are six shots off the lead.

Pettersen struggled early on, but her 37 on the front nine was eclipsed by 30 on the back nine, including five consecutive birdies.

Meanwhile Lincicome appears to have bounced back from her disappointment at the LPGA Championship.

US Open champion Michelle Wie's return from a finger injury lasted just 13 holes.

Wie was forced to retire when languishing on five over par.
