  • Intro:

Bardiani-CSF's Edoardo Zardini moves into the lead of the Tour of Britain after winning the third stage in Abergavenny, Wales, with Sir Bradley Wiggins fifth.

    Script:

The third stage of the Tour of Britain took riders from Newtown to The Tumble in Wales on Tuesday.

Defending champion Bradley Wiggins came home in fifth place, 14 seconds down.

The Team Sky rider is 24 seconds adrift of Edoardo Zardini in the overall standings with five stages remaining.

A six-man breakaway made up of Mark McNally, Thomas Stewart, Sebastian Lander, Michael Cuming, Yanto Barker and Manuele Boaro was allowed to move clear and build up a gap of almost three minutes. But they couldn't hold off the chasing peloton and the last of them were caught with just under 7km to go.

Omega Pharma Quick-Step's Mark Cavendish worked hard for the team at the front of the peloton to pull in the day's escape group.

Italy's Zardini pulled clear as the peloton tackled the ascent on the outskirts of Abergavenny to win by nine seconds from Michal Kwiatkowski.

The 24-year-old is now 13 seconds ahead of the Pole at the top of the general classification.
