Stage four of the Tour of Alberta took the riders out of Edmonton along country roads and back into Sherwood Park on a 163.5-kilometre course .

Eight men broke away early - led by Nic Hamilton. The group stretched out to a four-minute lead at one stage.

Overall race leader Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands however, had little cause for concern, aware of the fact that no one in the group was within six minutes of his overall time.

The leading pack of eight riders started the final six kilometres in total control, but it didn't last long.

Midway through the second lap the leaders had been engulfed by the peloton.

Theo Bos of the Netherlands broke away of the pack in the final metres.

The Belkin-Pro Cycling rider finished in three hours 42 minutes 50 seconds. South Africa's Daryl Impey took second with Jure Kocjan of Slovenia third.

Dumoulin meanwhile finished with the remainder of the peloton and retained the yellow jersey as tour leader.

The Tour of Alberta comes to a close on Sunday with a 124 kilometres stage around the heart of Edmonton.
