Favourite Tom Dumoulin of Team Giant-Shimano lived up to his billing by winning the Tour of Alberta prologue in Calgary on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old finished his time trial almost 14 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

The Dutchman crossed the line in five minutes, 59.7 seconds ahead of Serghi Tvetcov, who came second after clocking six minutes, 13.66 seconds.

Dumoulin takes the yellow jersey for the first stage proper, which takes place in Lethbridge on Wednesday.

Tvetcov will wear the green jersey in the next stage as the quickest sprinter.

Coming in third place was Tom Danielson of the USA.

Danielson's time of six minutes, 13.66 seconds fell some 17 seconds short of Dumoulin. However the 36-year-old did claim the title of king of the mountain, taking the red polka dot jersey for the opening stage.
