Wayne Rooney said on Tuesday (2nd September) that it will be a honour to captain England at Wembley for the first time.
England manager Roy Hodgson played down fears that a record low attendance for England at the new Wembley could harm the future of international football in the country, as well as reflecting on England's World Cup.

    (on being named England captain)

"Of course it will be a special moment for myself and my family and it's a great honour for me, I love playing for my country. When fit I'm always one for playing, never one to be pulling out (of the squad). I enjoy playing for my country and I want to do well. To walk out as captain of the team is a great honour and something which I'll never forget."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager

    (reflecting on the World Cup)

"We thought going into the tournament that we were making certain strides, there was a rejuvenation of the team, there were some very interesting young players coming forward. And I think it's going to be very important for us now, although we'll never forget the experience - it's going to scar us of course because those bad experiences do scar you, but in some ways they also serve as a reminder because none of us want to be in that situation again in a dressing room as we were against Uruguay. And also, the young players, as Wayne rightly points out, they were thrown in at the deep end here. Unfortunately they didn't swim on that occasion but I'll think they'll swim on the next occasion."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager

(on the low ticket sales for the Norway game)

"It is a good crowd and we've had fantastic support. Certainly I've been very lucky because almost every game I've had at Wembley, even against opponents that in themselves aren't intrinsically attractive to the public, we've played in front of full houses. So it will be a new experience for me but as Gary Neville was pointing out to me there was a time when he was playing that they couldn't get beyond 25,000 people, so let's keep things in perspective."
