Austin Ernst won the LPGA Tour's Portland Classic on Sunday (31 August) with a par on the first hole of a playoff against South Korea's I.K. Kim.

    Script:

The final round of the LPGA Portland Classic was held at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club on Sunday (31 August).

Defending champion Suzann Petterson shared the third-round lead with two other golfers, but faded in the round to drop out of contention. Pettersen shot a 74 in the final round, and finished the event at nine-under par.

Austin Ernst pulled into contention with a 5-under 31 on the front nine,

However, the American opened the door for I.K. Kim as she stumbled down the stretch. She missed green at Nos. 17 and 18, which both resulted in bogeys.

At the par-4 18th, Kim missed the green long with her second shot, but chipped to three feet and made the par putt to force a playoff.

The sudden-death match-up started badly for Kim who sent her shot into the rough.

Ernst could have sealed her first professional victory with a long birdie, but she watched as it settled agonisingly close to the cup. meaning she tapped in for par.

That put the pressure on Kim who missed her eight-foot par putt to hand the win to the American.

The LPGA Tour now takes a one-week break before the season's fifth major, the Evian Championship in France.
