  • Intro:

Following Spain's dismal performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, national coach Vicente del Bosque unveiled a new-look 23-man squad on Friday

Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque named a squad that features five new faces for next week's friendly against France and European Championship qualifier against Macedonia.

The youthful quintet of Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia, Valencia striker Pablo Alcacer, Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San Jose, Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal and Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla all got their first call up to the squad, while Isco, Marca Bartra and Ander Iturraspe have been recalled.

But absent from del Bosque's squad are Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, Manchester United's Juan Mata and Barcelona's Gerard Pique, who is injured.

Xavi and Xabi Alonso are also missing after announcing their retirement following the World Cup.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) (on Spain's World Cup performance)

"The World Cup was our fault, call it a disaster or collapse but these things happen in sport and I want to clarify that it was not a miserable defeat but a sporting defeat. We have learned to accept defeat as athletes but the things happened by sporting circumstances - but I wanted to clarify it was not a miserable defeat, it was a sporting defeat and we have learned to accept defeat as we do as athletes and it was a flawless performance by the players and there was not a bad atmosphere anywhere. It was a flawless performance by all players. We have made this list as result of this poor performance...it was a generation that has given us many successes and in some cases we have to renew and that's it."

"I feel indispensable (as coach) and I will continue feeling this way while I'm here even though that there are many coaches who could maybe do a better job. Don't take this the wrong way, any employee who has a job has to feel that they are crucial. Now I feel indispensable although I know there are a lot of coaches and good people who could do a good job."
