Intro:
The annual Bourton-on-the-Water football match was held on Monday (25th August).
Script:
Monday's bank holiday may have been a wash out for most of us, and affected sporting fixtures across the country, but the rain wasn't a cause for concern for those by the river banks in Bourton-on-the water, for the annual football match in the river.
The game saw the first and second teams from Bourton Rovers FC go head-to-head.
Now, you could be excused for thinking that you would have to be under the influence to create a game like this one, but the tradition is alleged to have started 115 years ago after some locals drinking in a nearby pub decided to take to river for a kick about.
A 30-minute match proved to be highly entertaining for the onlookers. And as if they weren't wet enough from the rain, they weren't spared by the players either; enduring several soakings throughout.
SOUNDBITE (English) David (surname not given), spectator:
"The event is really fun. It's just proper 'Britishness'. It's good fun in the rain. It doesn't matter. All the people are having a laugh. The football players enjoy themselves and then they kick the ball but most of the time the kick the water at the onlookers so it's just really good fun to watch."
And despite a late red card, the senior side ran out 2-0 winners.
