Francesco Molinari put himself in position to take his national title for a second time as he claimed a share of the first round lead along with Bernd Wiesberger at the Italian Open.

Thursday saw the home favourite play some truly brilliant approach shots on the back nine as he made 4 birdies on his way in.

His second shot at the par 4, 14th gave him the simplest of putts for birdie, before a very similar shot at the par 5, 15th gave him the same.

Molinari ensured his share of the lead on the par 4, 18th with this approach which again set up birdie for a 6-under par round of 66.

His compatriot Matteo Mannassero, got off to the perfect start on home soil making birdie on the par 4, 1st.

He struggled after that though and ended the day with a 1-over par 73. He picked up two more birdies but he also had two bogeys and a double bogey.

Wiesberger, however matched hometown favourite Molinari stroke for stroke - with both players producing bogey-free rounds.

Wiesberger set up birdie at the par 4, 11th with this fantastic approach out of the semi-rough.

This delightful pitch at the par 5, 15th then set up his final birdie of the day as he parred his way in.

Both Wiesberger and Molinari will be hoping to continue there form as the competition continues with day two on Friday.
