    In the Badminton first round of the World Championships the women's singles competition got underway. Commonwealth Games champion Michelle Li of Canada secured a straight-sets win over England's Fontaine Mica Chapman.

    Li saved eight set points in the first set going on to take it 28-26 - she then took the second 21-17.

    In the mixed doubles Mads Pieler Kolding and Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark comfortablY overcame Raymond Tam and Gronya Somerville of Australia.

    The home side never really looked in any danger, taking the game 21-10, 21-9.

    Vietnam's Tien Minh Nguyen booked his place in the second round of the men's singles competition with a win over Howard Shu of the USA.

    Into the evening's action and Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia coasted past South Korean Dong Kun Lee - 21-11, 21-12.

    Home favourite, Jan Jorgensen, overcame Maxime Moreels in straight sets to move into the second round.

    And in mixed doubles, Singaporean pair Susanto and Jordan defeated the Japanese pair in two tightly contested games.
