  • Intro:

Genk secured their first win of the new Belgium season with a 3-2 victory over Gent on Friday.

    Script:

With new manager Alex McLeish in the stands, Genk hosted league leaders Gent in the latest round of the Belgium pro league on Friday.

The lashing rain did little to hinder the endeavour of the players as a pulsating first half unfolded.

Slightly against the run of play, it was the home side who took the lead in the 19th minute.

Thomas Buffel's cross found Sekou Cisse in position to provide a superb finish.

Ten minutes later, Genk doubled their lead.

Again Buffel made ground on the right before providing the cross.

This time it was Ilombe Mboyo who finished it off, passing the ball into the top corner first time.

But there was little time to celebrate as the visitors pulled one back barely a minute later.

Brecht Dejaegere made a storming run to the edge of the area before finding the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Four minutes later, Gent pulled level.

This time it was Danijel Milicevic who scored, curling his free kick over the wall and into the side netting.

Perhaps inevitably, the second half struggled to match the pace of the first as both sides seemed to tire.

But it was the hosts who made the most of a rare opportunity in the 67th minute, Okriashvili providing the close range finish to put his side in the lead.

Despite over five minutes of stoppage time, Genk held on to close out a valuable 3-2 win.
