Western Sydney Wanderers upset Guangzhou Evergrande 1-0 in bad-tempered AFC Champions League quarter-final clash in Australia on Wednesday (August 20).

    Script:

Defending Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande were in Australia on Wednesday to face the A-League's Western Sydney Wanderers in the opening leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final.

Guangzhou boss Marcello Lippi's side applied the early pressure with former Italy international Danielo Gilardino's shot saved by Western Sydney goalkeeper Ante Covic in the 19th minute.

Just before the interval, Guangzhou were denied again by Covic when he kept out Liao Lisheng's effort.

    It was goalless at half-time.

The hosts started the second half more confidently and in the 60th minute the Wanderers' Antony Golec slipped in an attempted pass that ended up in the back of the net.

It went from bad to worse for the Chinese side.

Just before stoppage time, Guangzhou's Zhang Linpeng fouled Western Sydney's Iacopo La Rocca and was shown a red card, much to the anger of the Guangzhou players.

Then in stoppage time, Gao Lin was sent off for a stamp on Vitor Saba.

Lippi was livid and stormed onto the pitch and Western Sydney head coach Tony Popovic had words with the Italian's coaching staff moments after the final whistle.

It finished 1-0 as the Western Sydney Wanderers upset the reigning Asian champions.

The two sides will go at it again next Wednesday in Guangzhou.
