Federer lifts Cincinnati trophy

    World number three Roger Federer beats David Ferrer for a 16th successive time to win a sixth Cincinnati Masters title.

    Script:

    David Ferrer was standing in the way of Roger Federer's 80th singles title in the Cincinnati Masters final on Sunday.

    Federer saved four break points on his own serve in the penultimate game before taking the set 6-3.

    Ferrer replied by almost inflicting the world number three's first love set in six years as he stunned the Swiss with a triple break to claim the set 6-1.

    The third set went with serve until Federer broke in the fourth game to regain momentum at 3-1 up. The 17-time Grand Slam champion took control from there on and won the set 6-2.

    The Wimbledon runner-up was delighted to claim his his sixth Cincinnati title:

    "A great week for me. A great year so far, I couldn't be more excited. I love this tournament here in Cincinnati, I've played so well here over the years. Now I need some rest and I'll get ready for New York soon."

    Federer now heads to New York for the US Open.
