Indian cricket fans may have been surprised by the fact that under-fire captain MS Dhoni missed practice at The Oval on Wednesday.

The official line was that Dhoni needed rest but the sight of Ishant Sharma bowling would have distracted supporters anyway.

Dhoni should be fit to play the fifth Test on Friday but Sharma could be key to India's plans of levelling the series at 2-2.

Sharma missed two Tests to a "leg injury" and he has slowly been increasing his bowling load since the end of the Test at Old Trafford.

After India's capitulation in the fourth Test, Sharma would be a welcome return, most likely replacing Pankaj Singh if fit.

Guatam Gambhir could retain his place at the expense of Shikhar Dhawan.

It is a risk for India considering Gambhir's struggles during the fourth Test but it appears Duncan Fletcher and the absent captain have faith in the batsman to help India save themselves from series defeat.
