Tsonga out as Youzhny and Cilic progress

Wednesday, August 13 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

French number twelve seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the big casualty on the second day of action at the ATP Cincinnati Masters in Ohio on Tuesday (12 August) - the winner of last week's Toronto Masters was beaten in the first round by Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-4 in just 68 minutes.

    Script:

He'd beaten Djokovic, Murray, Dimitrov and Federer last week on his way to the Toronto Masters title.

But the enigma that is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was knocked out in the first round in Cincinnati.

His victor, Mikhail Youzhny, hadn't beaten a higher ranked player all year but blew away Tsonga in just over an hour - 6-1 6-4.

He finished it in style and now faces Andreas Seppi in the second round.

Also through is Marin Cilic who beat Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.

Lopez had reached the semi-finals in Toronto but a break of serve in each set proved enough for Cilic as he won 6-3, 6-4.

He'll face another Spaniard in round two...Fernando Verdasco.
