Tommy Robredo survived a first set tie-break to advance to the second round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday.

The Spanish 16th seed won the opening set 7-6 against wild-card American Jack Sock before taking the second set 6-3.

Frenchman Gael Monfils took the first step in his quest to return to the top 20 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Argentine world number 63 Federico Delbonis and reach round two.

Monfils, who last week pushed world number one Novak Djokovic to a third-set tie-break in Toronto, is currently 23rd in the ATP Rankings.

Fabio Fognini overcame a serious challenge by Edouard Roger-Vasselin, winning a third set tie-break.

Having taken the first set 6-4 in comfortable enough fashion, Fognini allowed Roger-Vasselin to claim the second set by the same scoreline.

However, the Italian improved again in the third set, winning a superb rally to draw level at 4-4 before going on to claim a 7-5 victory in the tie-break.

Big serving American John Isner used the home support to his advantage, defeating South African Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-4 to secure his place in round two.
