  • Intro:

Rory McIlroy made an 8-foot (2.44 metres) birdie putt at the 18th hole on Saturday (August 9) to maintain a one-shot lead at the PGA Championship.

Going for back-to-back major wins, McIlroy birdied three of the last four holes for a 4-under 67.

    His three-day total is 13-under 200.

    Script:

A heavy rainstorm hit Valhalla early on Saturday - heroic efforts by the groundstaff quickly ensured the course was playable once the clouds had passed.

Jason Day though, was not finished with the water.

Somehow, he made par at the second - ending the day with a 69 that saw him drop to a tie for fourth at ten under par.

The competition continued to intensify as the round wore one.

As plenty of big names began to gravitate towards the top - Jim Furyk lost ground, going round in a one-over-par 72 and ending the day seven under for the tournament.

Phil Mickelson on the other hand was in majestic form late in the day, ending round three with four birdies in his last five holes.

The American is in a tie for fourth with Day on 10 under par.

Rickie Fowler produced yet another excellent round of 67 proving to be the model of consistency of late, he ended the day on 11 under in third.

Bernd Wiesberger though, was stunning, putting overnight leader Rory McIlroy under severe pressure.

The Austrian matched Hunter Mahan for the best round of the day - a six-under-par 65.

He would have finished in a tie for the lead on a 12-under-par, but for McIlroy holding his nerve and hitting a birdie of his own on the 18th.

McIlroy went around the course in Valhalla in 67 for the second successive day and the competition is wonderfully poised for what will be a thrilling day of golf on Sunday.
